Creating the Business Model

This Program, "Creating the Business Model", is the second in a series of forums designed to help develop the skills of the new entrepreneur.  A new business venture may take several forms.  The panel members have each formed several businesses and will discuss what factors and considerations determined which business models were appropriate for the companies they founded.


Keynote Speaker: Cheryl Watkins SneadPresident and CEO of Banneker Industries, Inc. 

Banneker Industries, Inc. and Cheryl have received numerous awards, both for business accomplishments and ongoing civic work; including the 2004 National Federation of Black Women Business Owners “Woman of Courage Emerging Business” Award, the 2003 Rhode Island Black Heritage Society’s Labor & Enterprise Award, the 2000 New England Minority Entrepreneur of the Year and the Rhode Island Business & Professional Women’s “Women Mean Business”.  Banneker Industries has been recognized nationally in Inc., Essence and Black Enterprise magazines as well as the L.L. Bean Catalogue.

Panelists:

Robert Petrocelli, CEO, Heartlab, Inc.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Petrocelli is a physicist and computer scientist with a background in signal processing, applied math and large network design.  He worked in the cardiac image processing lab at Brown University with Dr. Elion, developing advanced algorithms for processing cardiac images, including methods for the automated recognition of coronary arteries within a coronary arteriogram. At 36, Robert is more than a brilliant engineer; his business savvy and entrepreneurial instinct are equal strengths. A New England finalist for the esteemed Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000, he is the driving force behind Heartlab's accelerating growth.

Nabil Lawandy, President, CEO, CTO, Solaris Nanosciences Corporation

Nabil M. Lawandy serves as President, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Solaris Nanosciences Corporation and Spectra Systems Corporation. From 1981 to 1999, he was a tenured full professor of Engineering and Physics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Nabil also served as the President and Chairman of the Board of SpectraDisc Corporation, a former subsidiary of Spectra Systems. He holds a B.A. in Physics from The Johns Hopkins University, an M.S. in Chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University. He has authored over 170 reviewed scientific papers and is an inventor on 40 issued patents. Nabil has also received a Presidential Young Investigator award, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, a Rolex Award for Enterprise and a Samuel Slater Award for Innovation.

Jeffrey Jacober, Founder and CEO, The Ocean Group and Medport, Inc.

Jeff Jacober has been dubbed a serial entrepreneur by entrepreneur magazine having founded over a dozen businesses since graduating college 27 years ago. His consumer products companies have ranged from printed T-shirts, to sporting goods to medical products. He has received numerous entrepreneurial awards from various organizations including Ernst & Young, Inc. Magazine, The State of Rhode Island and Harvard Business School.

Jacober is currently the Founder and CEO of The Ocean Group, Inc. which has an entrepreneurial business incubator that provides investment capital, management and operating services to its early stage consumer products businesses. The Ocean Group currently supports our independent consumer products companies. His goal is to create an environment where his companies can thrive and flourish in an increasingly competitive marketplace. By sharing administrative costs and infrastructure, each company can focus on creating and marketing useful, consumer friendly, profitable products.
