The Newport Division of NUWC’s expertise and facilities are dedicated to antisubmarine warfare-related research and development, however there are numerous technologies with applications in the private sector. NUWC is involved with numerous initiatives where Division personnel share information with members of academia and state/local governments. There are several facilities at NUWC available to the private sector: an Acoustic Test Facility (a test bed for acoustic evaluation of underwater sonar) an Advanced Submarine Launch Facility (acoustic and performance measurements of torpedo launchers), a Propulsion Noise Test System (measures underwater radiated noise of torpedo vehicles without interference from propulsor or flow noise), and an Acoustic Wind Tunnel (for advanced studies in propulsor hydrodynamics). NUWC conducts applied research in nanotechnology, and is interested in developing programs to cooperate with industry and academia to develop innovative solutions to undersea warfare issues.
