Dr. Arto Nurmikko
Division of Engineering, Brown University

Dr. Nurmikko is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, of the Optical Society of America, and of the IEEE. He currently leads four federally-funded multi-university research teams in the areas of electronic and optoelectronic devices, neuroengineering and bioagent detection. Dr. Nurmikko recently received $8.4 million to create a compact warning system for airborne biological agents such as anthrax from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The goal of his research is to build a small laser-based bioagent warning system for use in buildings or homes, or for troops to carry in their backpacks in the field. Eventually, his system would be used in a lightweight device, such as a small box, which could be produced on a large-scale. The device would sound an alarm when an airborne bioagent such as anthrax has been detected.
