Keynote Speaker: Catherine Cotell – Vice President, In-Q-Tel
Catherine M. Cotell, Vice President of In-Q-Tel, received her B.A. in chemistry and mathematics from Wellesley College, and her S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in metallurgy and materials science and engineering, respectively. After two years as a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Cathy joined the staff of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where she conducted research in surface modification and thin film coatings for electronic, optical and biomedical applications. She joined the staff of the Technology Transfer Office at NRL in June of 1997, and assumed the position of head of the Office in April of 1999. As head of Technology Transfer, she evaluated, managed and marketed NRL’s intellectual property portfolio, negotiated Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and patent license agreements, and facilitated collaborations and interactions between NRL researchers and the commercial sector. In July of 2003, she joined the staff of In-Q-Tel, the venture catalyst for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). As In-Q-Tel’s Vice President for University Outreach, Cathy searches for emerging technologies at universities and federal laboratories and orchestrates the commercialization of the technologies for sustainable delivery to the intelligence community.
Speakers:
Dr. Humphrey Maris, Professor of Physics, Brown University
Humphrey came to Brown in 1965 after two years as a postdoctoral research associate at Case Institute of Technology. He is a 1960 graduate of Imperial College, London, where he also received the Ph.D. in 1963, before coming to the United States. In 1972 and 1973 he was a visiting professor at the University of East Anglia in England and at Chalmers Institute of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden. He has carried out research at the Max Planck Institute in Grenoble, University of Tokyo, University of Paris, Centro Atomico Bariloche in Argentina, Institute for Physical Problems in Moscow, and the University of Hokkaido. He is a Professor of Research at École Normale Supérieure in Paris. In 1991 he was appointed the George Chace Professor of Natural Science at Brown. Brown Technology Partnerships recently named Humphrey as the first winner for Brown's Award for Technological Innovation for his creation and commercialization of PULSE Technology™. This PULSE technology is a method for measuring the properties of thin films, particularly of materials deposited during the manufacture of semiconductor devices. Rudolph Technologies licensed this technology from Brown University and introduced an instrument to conduct the measurements; this mechanism has become the standard measurement tool in the industry. Humphrey will present the view of the inventor whose technology was commercialized through the use of a license.
